Thallus thin, plane, rimose-areolate to verruculose, yellowish white to yellowish grey or grey-orange, epruinose. Soredia absent. Prothallus not visible or whitish. Apothecia immersed when immature, becoming sessile, 0.4–1.2 mm diam.; disc pale to dark red-brown, or reddish orange, epruinose or slightly pruinose; margin concolorous with the thallus, thin, entire. Cortex hyaline, indistinct, basally gelatinous, laterally opaque with small crystals, 15–20 µm thick laterally and 20–65 µm thick basally. Amphithecium with numerous small crystals soluble in KOH (campestris-type). Parathecium hyaline, without crystals, 10–15 µm thick. Epihymenium orange-brown to reddish brown, K–, without crystals (glabrata-type), c. 10–12 µm thick, with a 2.5 µm thick hyaline layer above. Hymenium hyaline, 75–100 µm thick. Hypothecium and subhymenium hyaline. Paraphyses 1.5–2.0 µm wide, sparingly branched apically and capitate (to c. 2.5 µm wide) and reddish brown to orange-brown apically. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 9.5–15.0 × 5.5–8.0 µm. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and apothecial margin K+ yellow, C–, Pd+ pale orange; containing atranorin (major), chloroatranorin (minor) and the triterpenoids Lgr-1 (major), Lgr-2 (trace) and Lcm-1 (trace). | ||
This corticolous species grows on various shrubs and Melaleuca bark in Chenopodiaceae heaths and mallee vegetation in southern W.A., S.A., N.S.W. and Vic. It also occurs in mediterranean areas of Eurasia, North Africa, North and South America and South Africa. | ||
